The chessmaster site brings back bad memories.

I took my son to a tournament a few months ago, a National Junior. Those Tournament Directors are worse than computer nerds. Come to think of it, the chess players are not much better.

I used to play in those tournaments while in high school. As a 13-year-old, I would take a bus to Manhattan and play the first round on a Friday night. Then I'd hook up with one of the upper-classmen and rent a room in a flophouse for the weekend for about $25 each. 4 more matches Saturday, 3 Sunday.

I used to awaken from nightmares of chesspieces attacking in my sleep.

When I finally got to college I limited my play to competing for drinks in bars. Thank God my kid is not as driven to study the game as I was. Those tournaments are mind-benders and those chief TDs are totally messed up. Imagine the geekiest nerd you know. THAT, could be an aspiring chief TD.
