Shannon says that Win64 may be demoed at the WinHEC conference in early April but Compaq would love to show it off at Innovate 99. Compaq successfully booted Win64 on its Alpha platform at the end of last year, and at an Intel Developer Forum in February, senior Merced engineers reckoned they'd be able to do the same in a month or so. His information is that Microsoft would like to field a Beta One release late this year, followed by a Beta Two about 12 months from now, and a Release Candidate by mid-2000. "Of course, what Microsoft wants and what will actually transpire may differ," Shannon rightly points out. ®
