12/03/96 - UK - Novell Pushes NOS Market Share To 81.41%

BRACKNELL, BERKSHIRE, ENGLAND, 1996 DEC 3 (Newsbytes) -- By Sylvia Dennis. Just a few years ago, Novell was claiming around 70 percent of
the network operating system (NOS) market in the UK. Far from having fallen recently, however, Novell"s share has actually risen. Now the company claims that a Spikes Cavell survey gives the networking company an impressive 81.41 percent of the marketplace.

According to the Spikes Cavell survey, the figure has risen steadily since January of this year, when it stood at 79.23 percent. Perhaps even more fortuitously for Novell, the report predicts that the networking giant will remain in a dominant market position as users" strategic focus shifts from local area networks (LANs) to intranets, with over two thirds (68.52 percent) of respondents choosing Novell for their strategic NOS buying decisions.

According to Tom Schuster, managing director Novell UK, Ireland, and Africa, the research validates the company"s pole position in the emerging market for intranets.

Schuster claims that IntranetWare, the Internet-savvy edition of NetWare, which started shipping just three months ago, is at the core of Novell"s intranet strategy. "It"s a high performance system optimized for running intranets," he said.

The Spikes Cavell report is not the only report in Novell"s favor. Novell has wheeled out a report from the US-based Aberdeen Group which found that: "The more stable IntranetWare -- which has the strengths of NDS (Novell Directory Services), and the World Wide Web server, and the Internetwork Packet Exchange/Internet Protocol (IPX/IP) Gateway, and higher levels of security included in the package -- obviates the need for Windows NT for Internet and intranet Web servers."

According to officials with Novell, the Spikes Cavell research is part of an ongoing monitoring program of the information technology (IT) industry. In the survey, 3,500 organizations were asked about their network operating system and their strategic buying decisions.
