NSW gold mine expansion conditionally approved

Thursday, 18/03/2010

abc.net.au

Plans for a $58 million expansion of a gold mine near West Wyalong in Central West NSW have been conditionally approved.

Barrick Gold originally wanted to almost double the size and life of its Cowal Gold Mine, but modified the plans after legal action.

NSW Planning Minister Tony Kelly says the expansion will support 800 jobs over the next decade, including 370 at the mine.

But Barrick Gold may need to buy three affected farms, if the owners request it, and mitigate noise on six other properties.

The mine is currently a big buyer of water on the open market.

But Mr Kelly says Barrick has found potential alternative sources to reduce reliance on its Lachlan River entitlements.
