Galileo set to alter Ethernet switch market

Silicon Valley- Galileo Technology Ltd. wants to pull the rug out
from under the Fast Ethernet switch market.

The fabless chip maker has announced a 10/100-Mbit/s Ethernet
switch chip set, called the GT-48004A, that promises to knock
down per-port prices of Fast Ethernet switches by up to 50% by
next summer, according to Barry Gray, director of product
marketing at Galileo, San Jose.

Typical of the prices of recently announced Fast Ethernet switch
products are Bay Networks' BayStack 350T 16-port switch,
with a per-port price of $250 and a list price for the switch of
$3,395; and 3Com Corp.'s SuperStack II 3000, a 12-port switch
with a $291 per-port price and a list price for the switch of
$3,495.
