Mine Marcellus to boost energy

James L. Simpson's May 16 letter urged citizens to voice their concerns regarding the development of natural gas reserves in the Marcellus Shale in central New York and the Southern Tier. I would suggest that citizens also learn the facts and science of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.

The scare tactics employed by environmental groups such as Riverkeeper are based on isolated incidents of water-well contamination not definitively linked to hydraulic fracturing.

The fact is that there are multiple layers of cement and steel casing protecting any aquifers from natural gas contamination, not to mention thousands of feet of bedrock. Concerned New Yorkers should check out the U.S. Department of Energy's publication, "Modern Shale Gas Development in the United States: A Primer (April 2009)," to learn how gas is extracted from shale. The facts and science will put their minds at ease.

Meanwhile, the state Department of Environmental Conservation has been working diligently to draft regulations focusing primarily on water concerns associated with horizontal drilling and hydrofracturing? There already have been substantial public comments and hearings around the state. The draft regulations are expected soon, followed by another public comment period.

This issue has been studied thoroughly. When the final regulations are released this summer, the permitting needs to begin.

Development of the Marcellus Shale will revitalize the upstate economy and help our nation in becoming energy independent. Let the DEC do its job.
