An interesting networking/DVD play:

Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ:SNIC) has halved the production cost
of DVD with their new 'Creator' workstation. Sonic's primary
products are MediaNet, and a line of DVD production tools.

MediaNet is a high-speed, 'real-time' network file system designed
for audio/video post production facilities. 'Post houses', as they are
called, can use MediaNet for simultaneous sharing and editing of files
between multiple editors. In a business known for 'expensive minutes',
the post-production industry has found MediaNet to be an effective
solution for cutting editing time, thus meeting the 'impossible
deadlines' imposed by film and audio producers. I've toured a few of
these post-houses and they typically use Cisco or 3COM components.
For the network savvy:

Sonic's original entry into DVD production utilized a rather
complex SGI/Macintosh system priced out of the range of the
small to medium sized developers ($170k-$240k). Recently, Sonic
introduced an 'all-in-one' desktop solution to accomplish the
same end without the 6 digit price tag.

Sonic had been recommended by Michael Murphy (CTSL) for the
past two years, a sure kiss of death for any company. Fortunately,
he has sold his position and taken it off his 'buy list'; one
should expect reasonable share price appreciation as a result.
