Spent the evening on the IBM patent search site. My eyes are now officially blurry. Ballard does have some major competitors, although none is a pure play as Ballard is. Searching on "fuel cells" and various company names revealed the following patents:

United Technologies and International Fuels LLC (its sub)--300 patents
Westinghouse--84
Fuji Denki (Electric)--52
Hitachi--59
Ballard--43
Toshiba--27
NGK Insulators--37

None of the Auto mfrs seems to have very many.

No way of knowing (1) the importance of the respective patents, or (2) the relevance of particular patents to particular areas. (For instance, it seemed that the Westinghouse patents were larger, power-plant related, and the UT patents were spread out over a wide range, but that's an impression only).

So, I think, in Gorilla-speak, we take our potential winners from the above.

Best,
JS
