IBM to increase flat panel display output 50% at DTI fabs

Display Technology Inc. (DTI), the thin-film transistor
(TFT)-LCD joint venture between IBM Corp. and Toshiba Corp.,
will expand capacity by 50% next year at two fabs in Himeji
and Yasu, Japan.

An IBM spokesman said the production expansion, which is set
to for April 1, 2000, will add 700,000 TFT-LCD panels to
DTI's combined annual manufacturing output.

IBM and Toshiba share DTI output equally. IBM's PC
operations will soon be able to draw on additional
production capacity from Acer Display Technology in Taiwan,
which will be shipping its first panels next month from a
new fab.

Under an earlier agreement, IBM sold Acer its TFT-LCD
manufacturing technology, and reportedly has a claim to some
of the plant's panel output.
