Good point: <children from single family homes have more problems than ones that don't. We conclude that the problem is the single parent home. But what if it is one of the symptoms? > But rather than be sidetracked by race of the African/non-African variety look at race of the intelligent with impulse control vs unintelligent lacking impulse control variety, which is also genetic [in large part]. Schizophrenia also has a significant genetic component and that's not good for outcomes.
Sex in humans is vastly variable and hideously complex, to the extent that a bloke might prefer monogamy with another bloke. People argue that male homosexuality is unnatural because it's not reproductive, but they ignore the fact that not all humans need to reproduce for a gene's prospects to be enhanced. Homosexual men seem to be in a hyperdrive with no inhibition in creativity [think Alan Turing and Queen] or intellect. One homosexual inventing the atomic bomb or CDMA helps his genes, millions of them in other people in his tribal gene pool, a lot more than does yet another heterosexual drudge tied to apron strings and pussy-whipped losing to a neighbouring tribe because he doesn't have time to invent good stuff [too busy chasing skirt].
Tiger Woods' father said that Tiger's challenge would come when he got a Honey-do "Honey do this, Honey do that". At the time I thought, "That's an interesting comment from his father". Sure enough, several years later, Tiger's gonads have blown him sky-high and he has not yet fully recovered. Sex messes with men's minds, as we all know. Perfectly sensible boys doing all sorts of intelligent and creative things find themselves led by their penis into a maelstrom of emotional carnage, financial wreckage, distraction from doing things.
Males without intelligent impulse control [pretty much all of us] do particularly badly. Women are more civilized and have better impulse control [not that they are particularly good] but lack the psychic impetus, competitiveness and 3 development years which drive the male creativity to champion levels. All substantial companies are started and built by men on a mission. Steve Jobs for example. Irwin Jacobs. Bill Gates, Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie, J D Rockefeller - any number of examples. You'll look in vain for women. There are a few like Body Shop [husband heavily involved] but men tend not to compete in such feminine things. But Body Ship didn't get to even the second generation, let alone 3rd: jonentine.com and was not a great company changing the world.
Children from low impulse control mothers, will have low impulse control [for the most part], while those with high impulse control mothers will have higher impulse control [more or less]. That's whether they are sole mothers or married, but married ones have better impulse control [generally]. It's not Negro vs non-Negro but Impulse control/non impulse control [which is also genetic].
Couples married for over 10 years generally have better impulse control than the not-married or separated.
All great theories, your mileage will vary.

PS: A personal example. 28 years ago, I was left with our 4 children because my father in law was dying and my wife went back to NZ from London for 5 weeks to be with him. After 3 weeks, one of the teachers asked me something and I explained that my wife was away for a few weeks. The teacher expressed surprise. She explained that normally they immediately see in the behaviour of children when there's any kind of split in the family and our children [3 were at school] gave no evidence of any problem at all. I felt quite smug and flattered and indeed life was a lot of fun and all was well and even easy. All ready for school, house totally organized, a Smartie reward for being early and off to the playground at 8.15am for some fun before school. Our single parent house was just fine though one daughter made a surrogate Mummy to hug, including a smiley face on it and kept it in a stroller [it wore one of my wife's dresses]. People say children are hard work. No they aren't. They are made into hard work by mismanagement. Children are great fun. |
