Yes. As I understand it, what was taken was a number of versions of the same document. What one would do with them is compare and contrast to see the differences. Typically in the drafting process each successive internal version is highlighted with redlines and strikeouts to clarify what is being changed and sometimes with explanations noted. (This I know about.) He would be used to seeing them that way. So if you have a bunch of versions without benefit of that highlighting it would be mindboggling and very natural to spread them out and follow along comparing and noting the differences as you go. This is a very plausible scenario if, indeed, the bit about the versions is correct. And clearly you'd need a copy of each version to do it, hence stealing multiple copies.
