Calvin Klein, Warnaco Close to Settlement

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A lawyer representing Calvin Klein Inc. asked a federal judge on Monday to briefly delay jury selection in the designer's trademark licensing battle with apparel maker Warnaco Group Inc. (WAC.N) because the two sides are close to a settlement.

Selection, which was scheduled to begin Monday morning, has been postponed until shortly after 10 a.m. for the two sides to report back to U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan.

Rakoff agreed to a brief delay after lawyer Jonathan Schiller said the parties had been working through the night and were close to a deal.

The legal dispute began in May, when Calvin Klein sued Warnaco and its chief executive, Linda Wachner, in Manhattan federal court, alleging they violated his lucrative trademark and broke a licensing contract by distributing Calvin Klein jeans to discount retailers like Sam's Club, BJ's and Costco.
