DMA, I have heard it said that the Southern accent is a throwback to the British accent, although I can hear no particular similarities between the two.

"Does the fact that there a two groups of people - those that are driven nuts by "nucular" (you) and those who can barely hear the difference (me) - mean our brains process language differently? Be an interesting experiment, divide people into two groups and look for differences in brain scans."

Hearing "nucular" doesn't drive me nuts; I merely found it odd that a nuclear physicist would pronounce it as such.

Yes, I have a singularly well-tuned ear for languages. I type medical reports and have done so for decades. Over those decades, I have had to process the King's English in increasingly mangled and nearly unrecognizable renditions--and I am not referring only to our many physicians who have come to us from foreign shores, if you get my drift.

But it's a gift, I say, and so do many of my friends who insist I accompany
them to computer swap meets to serve as a translator of others' English
into their English. <g> - Holly
