The winner in this debate will be the side that comes up with the best answer to split this zero-sum thinking:

"I don't think the country has any doubt there are two positions: One is to stay and fight and the other is to leave," said one Republican strategist familiar with White House thinking.

The White House seems to think it's to their advantage to keep the debate at a zero-sum level; they just attack their opponents as disloyal stupid wimps and carry on like they have since 9/11.

But if the polls are right and that strategy is a dead-end bunker with deteriorating credibility, a real alternative plan could take hold, provided someone comes up with one in the semi-organized chaos known as the Democratic Party.
