SanDisk Will Supply Maycom With 32MB MultiMediaCard for Use With New Merit Internet Music Player
SanDisk's MultiMediaCard Shows Growing Acceptance As Storage Medium Standard For New Portable Music Player Market
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 1999-- SanDisk Corporation (Nasdaq:SNDK - news), announced today that it will supply Maycom Company Ltd., a Korean consumer electronics company, with its MultiMediaCard for use with Maycom's new Merit MP-100 Player.
A 32MB SanDisk MultiMediaCard will be included with each Merit MP-100 Player sold.
''With increasing design momentum, our 32MB MultiMediaCard is gaining acceptance from the Internet music market to adopt our flash storage card as the industry's standard Internet music storage solution,'' said Nelson Chan, vice president of marketing at SanDisk. ''We are pleased that Maycom, one of the driving forces in the Korean portable consumer electronics market, has chosen the SanDisk MultiMediaCard as the ideal solution to store music for the new Merit MP-100 Player.''
The new pocket-sized Merit MP-100 Player, weighing only 65 grams, measures 2.05 x 3.47 x .91 inches. Operating on two AAA batteries, the very small, light and easy-to-grip Merit MP-100 Player includes a worldwide FM radio. A parallel port MultiMediaCard reader/writer for Windows® 95 and 98 desktop computers is also included with the sale of each Merit MP-100 Player sold.
Mr. Su-Won Bae, president of Maycom, said, ''With our new Merit MP-100 Player, we are entering a market which we believe will show rapid growth. Maycom designed the Merit MP-100 Player around practicality and ease-of-use. SanDisk's 32MB MultiMediaCard helped us achieve this with its ultra-small size and high capacity providing play back of about 30 minutes of near CD quality music.''
SanDisk's MultiMediaCard is the world's smallest removable flash data storage card. The postage stamp-sized memory card is rapidly being adopted by applications in markets such as smart phones, digital video, industrial handheld computing and Internet music.
Chan added that, ''SanDisk's MultiMediaCard is an ideal solution for the portable Internet music player market because there is no skipping of music as with Compact Disc players when the player is being used during exercise, and power consumption is extremely low because unlike CD, cassette tape or mini disc, there are no moving parts. SanDisk's MultiMediaCard can also be re-written numerous times resulting in absolutely no deterioration of the medium such as is the case with audio cassette tapes.''
Maycom expects availability of the Merit MP-100 Player including SanDisk's 32MB MultiMediaCard and a MultiMediaCard reader/writer for desktop computers to begin in June. The price is yet to be determined.
Beginning next month, SanDisk MultiMediaCards will be available at retail in Japan and Europe. Worldwide sales will start this summer. The MultiMediaCard will initially be sold at retail in 4, 8, 16 and 30MB capacities with suggested retail prices of $40, $50, $80 and $130 respectively.
