More facts, if you care to browse - k12.dc.us

By clicking on "data" and calling up individual high schools you can find some unbelievable numbers. I venture that there is no educational process in place in many of the schools. These "students" don't need teachers, credentialed or otherwise. They probably need DIs from Parris Island, to get started.

What's really bizarre is the percentage of parents, teachers and students who seem pleased with the way things are going.

I did not see reference to percentage of teachers with advanced degrees but recall a figure of about 80 percent from the Washington Post's education web site (since dumbed down). I used that figure in an opinion published in the Post several years ago and was not disputed by the paper or readers.

I am, as I may have noted, not impressed by the teacher credentialing process. IMO, it is a turf thing that keeps a lot of good people out of the classroom. No doubt there is information in credentialing programs that can ease a novice into teaching effectively - but, I believe the necessary info is also available through other means.

The private school that employs my son as vice principal and chemistry teacher has virtually no "credentialed" teachers but nearly all teachers have advanced degrees in the subjects they teach. Works well enough. A lot of
people who can afford the best send their kids.

If you look at demographics for DC schools you may notice that Anacostia High is all black, save a single white kid. I see movie deal here!
