I think most UWB articles overlook system power consumption.

A somewhat equivalent 100Mbps Fast Ethernet controller eats ~400mW, and a FE octal PHY about ~250mW per port. Power consumption scales with Moore's law, but the non-radio power budget will dominate until 0.08 SiGe is common, or we are talking about Bluetooth data rates (731kbps).

You could compare the Intersil MAC/BBP intersil.com page 9 with the Intel 82550 FE controller
intel.com at 500mW, and see there is a lot of necessary logic outside the radio/PHY.

100Mbps on battery power? not for long.
