Night Owl - Re: Sequent

1. Sequent was started by Casey Powell and others from Intel who were involved in Intel's iAPX432 program.

Their first machines were designed around National Semi's 32xxxx processors.

They have been using Intel processors since the 386/486 era.

Their new system design is a symmetric multiprocessor system based on a NUMA - NON UNIFORM MEMORY ARRAY Archictecture.

This describes the main memory that is (or, is not!) available to the many processors in the SMP system.I won't pretend to be an expert, but I believe it refers to each CPU NOT having access (or restricted access) to the memory available to the other CPUs in the system, ergo - non-uniform.

The " Unified Memory Architectures." [UMA] you mentioned were actually video graphics memory systems for PCs that were introduced (and may have since died) about two years ago.

These UMA graphics systems were designed to eliminate (or reduce) the display buffer memory required by conventional graphics accelerator chips on the graphics card. At that time, DRAM and its variants were expensive - about 4x the current prices.

The UMA used, instead, part of the main CPU's DRAM (main memory) for display buffer storage (typically one or two Megs). This required accessing main memory in order to refresh the display, slowing overall system performance. Further, it consumed 1 or 2 Megs of main memory, eliminating that memory for code/data storage.
