Cisco CEO's optimism put to test
Chambers confronts company's first real slump

Nine months into the first serious downturn in his company's history, one week after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks killed one of his managers, John Chambers stood in front of about 4,000 employees and told them he could sense their optimism.

``What is occurring now is the calm inner confidence that we're going to win, that we are going to change the world, and that this is the company to be with,'' said the chief executive officer of Cisco Systems, the communications equipment maker that is one of Silicon Valley's largest employers.
