I think it's much simpler, immaturity craving attention.

Elitist want to appear above and better than everyone else. They believe being different from you makes them better, no matter how small the corner they paint themselves into.

You've seen the ridiculous positions they've taken over the years, now it's nothing but mostly outright lies just like their president.
