"Why is the worm not showing up on any of my scans?"

Because it has already gotten what it needed.

"I am wondering if this is a new infection"

Could be.

"of getting bogus Mailer-Daemon email returns but no one knows how to get rid of the problem."

Ok. Actually, what could be happening is that whoever infected you originally has noticed that you have rid yourself of the virus. They are now sending you bogus email returns in the hope of reinfecting you. If this is the case, then getting your ISP to block them is the best course of action. That, and not opening those bogus Mailer-Daemon email returns.
