Okay, here is the only reason I have aapl stock ...
I really don't think of aapl as a long-term investment. I do believe that whatever comes out of the MacWorld EXPO will be good news.
Apple really cannot afford to drag their OS problems any longer. They have no choice but to take a stand now. It would be impossible to do the 2 year, re-engineer from the ground up, OS thing now. It's too late for that. There are too many legacy relics in MacOS 7.5.x to fix. And I belive that BeOs will end up being their final solution. Despite that last couple of posts here, BeOs is pretty nice. The problem people have with is that it *is not done* All of the negativity towards it is things like "It doesn't support printers", "It doesn't do plug-n-play", ... Things like that. But that's not that hard to do, and shouldn't have been the focus of Be's prototype system. Once they demonstrated the proof of concept, then they go back and make a commercial-ready OS. If think if Apple bit the hook now on this, it could be pretty close to commercial-ready by late '97, given that Be is allready working on the Mac emulator for the interum. I plan on attending the Be open house on Dec. 17 at their home office, to check out first hand this BeOS. Will report back anything that wasn't allready reported in the Mac mags of any interest.
I don't think aapl will ever really make big sales with the Newton. It is like the Dodge Viper. It's pretty cool to look at, Dodge isn't really making money off of it, and you don't really want to buy one. PDA's certainly do have a market, but I don't think that the Newton( given its current size and limited real-world, non-telephone-organizer applications) will ever make it, regardless of how fast of a CPU they give it.
Now their latest marketing scheme towards academia is interesting. Let's try and hold on to our education market. I suppose that is a smart marketing scheme. Any thoughts ??
