Excuse me, but I think you are missing the big picture here. Power supplies also power the rest of the system, like HDD, CDROM and floppy, which consume huge quantities of power compared to the CPU. Do you really think it would be smart to run all that power through the brains of the computer?

The fundamental problem here is that power supplies deal with higher voltages than the sub-micron technologies can handle. They down-convert to levels that can be tolerated. Power supplies in some form will always be there.
