FTC Cites False Head Lice Claims

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Three makers of head lice treatments were cited for false claims by the Federal Trade Commission on Friday and ordered to make clear that their products are not 100 percent effective on a single application.
The companies, Del Pharmaceuticals Inc., Pfizer Inc. and Care Technologies Inc., were told to state in future advertising that effectiveness depends on a second application and removal of lice eggs with a special comb.
''With six to 10 million kids a year dealing with head lice infestations, parents and care givers must be able to trust the ads they see for over-the-counter treatments,'' said Jodie Bernstein, head of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection.
The proposed orders ''would prohibit false and misleading claims about lice treatments and improve the disclosures companies make to consumers about how to use their products.'' They would require that for the next two years Dell's ''Pronto'' shampoo, Pfizer's ''Rid,'' and Care's ''Clear,'' state in advertising: ''Reapplication and egg removal are required to ensure complete effectiveness.''
Television ads should include the words ''Two treatments required,'' the FTC said.
The trade commission will decide after a 60-day comment period whether to make its order final.
''Having head lice is uncomfortable, annoying, and frankly, a painful ordeal for kids and their families,'' Bernstein said. ''False and misleading claims about the treatments just add insult to injury. Kahuna,
I'm glad to know that PFE would never be involved in false claims for a product, just to make money. Of course those government guys are just being picky about the truth.
Best of Luck in your infesting!!
