Don, it seems to me that the equipment makers probably got more buying interest on the speculation of increased mother board shipments from Intel. Even NVLS was up today despite lowering guidance again. KLAC on the other hand apparently gave some good vibrations out at the BOA Conference:
1:24PM KLA-Tencor gives positive comments at conference (KLAC) 27.33 +0.70: We are hearing that KLAC is now giving some marginally positive comments at the Banc of America conference; we're told that while the co maintained that the near-term outlook is still bleak, their presentation hasn't been as negative as some were expecting, which led to a spike in the stock as well as the SOX.
9:42AM Intel motherboard shipments being raised (INTC) 14.22 +0.09: Stock holding up well in a weak market; hearing that several brokerage firms (Piper, Salomon) are upping their estimates for September motherboard shipments, apparently the first uptick in some time; Piper analyst Ashok Kumar now sees Sep shipments up 13-14% vs prior estimate of 10% and sees low risk of further Q3 earnings disappointment.
5:47PM Micron CFO says loss of $0.27 (MU) 12.95 +0.19: -- Update -- Dow Jones reporting that on conf call MU CFO indicated that Q4 loss excluding charges was $0.27.
5:09PM Micron reports Q4 sales $748 mln vs $674.9 mln consensus (MU) 12.95 +0.19: -- Update -- Reports operating losses of $468 million which includes charges and is not comparable to consensus; results include a non-cash charge of $348 million, or $0.58 per diluted share, through the establishment of a valuation allowance against its deferred tax asset.
3:59PM RF Micro Device boosts forecast (RFMD) 5.94 +0.50: Announces that it now expects Q2 EPS to be $0.03 on revs of about $118 mln, vs previous guidance of $0.01-$0.02 and $109-$114 mln; co also commented that order visibility for Q3 continues to improve, and that it currently expects Q3 rev to increase sequentially.
Rambus (RMBS) 4.31 +0.15: Company's technology to be used in Samsung HDTVs.
ChipPAC (CHPC) 1.91 -0.09: Although confident in co's ability to meet Q302 est of loss of $0.02, firm is concerned with continued weakness in PC and graphic chipset markets; lowers Q4 and Y02 ests; expects co. to remain operationally cash flow positive due to scaled costs for current (and expected future) level of chip growth; maintains Outperform rating. Unlike most competitors, co. has managed to outperform Nasdaq through most of Y02, but has started to slip over last two months.
