It depends on what you mean by "existed". It wasn't formally called the Internet until the late 1980s. When I was on it in the early to mid-1980s, no one called it the Internet. We talked about Usenet, Archie, gopher, etc.

Nonsense. The Internet is composed of its services. That is what defines it. Now, some of those services are dependent on the protocols. The Web would have been very different if HyperCard had caught on instead of HTML.
