Amkor Technology, Inc. (AMKR) - On the Zacks Focus List & Timely Buys
Amkor is the world's largest provider of contract semiconductor packaging and test services. They offer a complete set of micro-electronics manufacturing services to over 150 customers worldwide including industry leaders Intel, Motorola, and Texas Instruments.

The chip industry is experiencing a multi-year recovery with both the traditional and advanced semiconductor packaging showing broad-based growth. Further, the faster and more complex nature of integrated circuits has increased the need for the type of interconnect services that Amkor provides resulting in increased outsourcing of packaging by the chipmakers. Amkor being the largest player, with the broadest range of services and customer base in the outsourcing of assembly and test services (approximately 30% market share), is benefiting from the outsourcing trends currently prevalent in the semiconductor industry.

All of these positive trends were on display February 3rd as they announced their fourth quarter results. The quarter came in at 26 cents per share, which was 63% ahead of the year ago quarter and 13% better than estimates. These earnings come hand in hand with a 27% rise in revenues and ample growth in profit margins.

Current estimates are for $1.12 in FY2000 then rising 44% to $1.58 in FY2001. Yet analysts continue to raise earnings estimates for both the current and next fiscal years based on expectation for strong growth and business momentum and continued margin expansion. Most notable is the recent report from Robertson Stephens who have upped their FY2000 target to $1.24, which is 10% higher than current estimates. These revisions have led to a Zacks Rank of 1 which places Amkor in both our Focus List and Timely Buys portfolios.
