Coping with Loss Bess Shulman, a Brookline mother of two, says that she will never forget the morning she came down to her kitchen to find her seven-year-old daughter bent over a dead goldfish, trying to administer air through a bicycle pump. The child was devastated with grief and remained inconsolable for some time. Bess felt helpless. She didn't know whether she should stop her daughter's vain efforts to revive the fish or leave the girl alone. bu.edu Clearly this mother failed her daughter and should have immediately called for a helicopter air-vac of the fish. No amount of counseling or shock treatment will help the child who has now reverted to a feral state.
