But I will say that Norman presented about as fair a picture of a guy like Archie, who was, after all, kind of ignorant and bigoted, as one could expect from a liberal. He would sometimes acknowledge his fundamental decency and complexity. The problem is that everything was presented as of a piece: patriotism and support for our military, the questioning of the welfare state, concern with standards of personal conduct, were just less offensive versions of his hot air ethnic stereotyping.....
