Protocols, services, and applications matter to the extent they are useful, but they can be, and are used outside the internet, and they can be replaced with other things.

What makes the internet the internet is that its a wide spread connection of different computers and networks. If 50 years from now we are no longer using TCP/IP or HTML, it will still be the internet with their replacements.
