Depends on what kind of visit you are interested in.

I understand that John Kennedy Jr. spent a couple of months in India, totally anonymous, stayed in cheap 3rd class hotels with no air conditioning and walked the streets to really understand the people and country.

The cities with their 5-star hotels will be very expensive. the countryside with very few creature comforts will be cheap. In th 60's many 'hippies' went to India and really lived cheap (read that free lodging on the streets, cheap food of less than a quarter for dinner) and created a bad name for the US since they were moslty involved with drugs and were dirty and filthy.
