Boeing announces 50-jet order for new 7E7

The Boeing Co.'s board of directors has approved the formal launch of the new 7E7 Dreamliner passenger jet based on a new order announced Monday.

Japan's All Nippon Airways (ANA) has placed an order for 50 7E7s. The ANA order is the largest launch order in history for a new Boeing commercial jet, officials of the Chicago-based aerospace firm said.

ANA's order was valued at $6 billion at list prices and a dozen other airlines are now set to announce their own 7E7 orders, Boeing said in a statement.

"We expect additional orders in the coming weeks and months," said Alan Mulally, chief executive of Boeing's Commercial Airplanes division. Production of the 7E7 is scheduled to begin in 2006. ANA is scheduled to begin taking deliveries of the 7E7 in 2008.

The city of Mesa tried to lure the lucrative 7E7 manufacturing facility to Williams Gateway Airport, but in the end Boeing selected facilities in Washington state.
