Well if the authorized participants, are participants because they want to make money, they will sell gold and buy shares that shorting causes to sell at a sufficient discount to the gold behind each share. This alone will keep the shorts from being able to drive the stock down but something else is at work. The relationship between the value of the gold held and the price of each share is something understood by almost all who are in the market, for equities, bonds and commodities. If conspiracy posters want to imagine that naked shorters are going to be able to persist and be victorious in selling something that has a clear value of x for 10% less, they are welcome to their theory.
