Years ago the final database used for mask generation was sent to the mask vendor on magnetic tape, hence the term "tapeout". That's no longer the case but the name lingers on. What was funny about the Register's article was the remarkably short processing time, 2-3 weeks from tapeout to samples, but also first power-on was 1 week after samples! EP
