Well, let's see... The critical test for INTENSIVE computing benchmarks as you say is the TPC-H database benchmark. The top performance spot for 100GB abd 300GB results (the tests most large enterprise buyers look at, since this is the current range of most large corproate databases) is held by IBM/Opteron. But your point about Price Performance is well taken. The top price performer on those same tests is Sun with a SunFire 250.

Itanium is nowhere on the list for any database size, from any vendor.

And as to IBM's 'lukewarm' support, their lead processor is their own PowerPC. Nonetheless, their benchmarking team chose Opteron.

IBM announces IBM eServer Cluster 1350 support for the IBM eServer 325, IBM's first AMD Opteron™ processor-based server. AMD Opteron processor Models 240, 242, and 246 will be supported for both 32-bit and 64-bit Linux operating systems.

Because AMD's chip can handle both 32- and 64-bit applications it creates a comfortable environment for businesses looking to migrate to more advanced 64-bit computing, IBM executives say.
