Mark: I left out one key element at the start of the "theoretical example": The MM KNOW that the stock is for real--that the stock will have future news that will significantly increase the desirability of the stock--so THEY drive the stock down on the lowest vol it takes to do it, then accumulate a lot on huge vol near the bottom, then vol decreases for maybe a month or two and more holders get discouraged and dump stocks--lots more for MM (and astute investors) to accumulate. The MM dont really have to do anything to drive the price up--the anticipated news will do that for them, but they sure can help it along when uptrend starts. At that point, the stock is in strong hand &/or in MM inventory--so not many sellers left, therefore easy to bump the price up rapidly--just raise the asked price every time the buy orders exceed sell orders.

It would be easy to explain this verbally and answer questions as they arise--its difficult to write it out and seems clumsy when I read it over and try to forsee your questions. Will be taking a week off and relaxing in the Berkshire Mountains up your way. Be back Wed 28th.

Good luck.
Gary
