It is a term invented by Gartner Group to indicate that they have no
knowledge of "embedded systems" at all and should not be commenting on the
topic.

They may mean an "embedded system" that consists only of a microcontroller.

If that is what they mean, then what they have said has no value anyway
because it is fairly widely known that single-chip "embedded systems" are
not used in any applications that will have significant impact on any
substantial parts of our infrastructure. Those with significant impact will
likely be implemented with microprocessors and be implemented with at least
several chips.

From what I have seen so far, I think that Gartner's capability in the realm
of "embedded systems" is only to report hearsay, that they don't remotely
understand. IOW "garbage".

I would completely discount Gartner as a source of information on "embedded
systems", unless they reference a credible source.
