News Corporation [X.NCP] has reaffirmed its commitment to a Hong Kong joint venture with Pacific Century CyberWorks [1186], despite betting against it in the race for Hong Kong Telecom earlier this week.

James Murdoch, News Corp's executive vice president and the newly appointed co-chairman of its Star TV subsidiary, met yesterday with CyberWorks' founder Richard Li, son of Hutchison Whampoa tycoon Li Ka Shing. Mr Murdoch said the venture was "not something you could walk away from", and that it could be expanded.

Star TV tied up with Hong Kong Telecom last year to provide internet and pay-TV services that would combine HKT's Netvigator with its own DTV digital service. It was expected to compete with CyberWork's Network of the World product, which combines web access and video programming.
However, earlier this week Mr Li's Cyberworks beat off Singapore Telecom to buy a majority stake in HKT from Cable & Wireless in a œ23bn deal.
