I was trying to figure out what changed in the 60s too.

We had the Demo inspired Bay of Pigs.
That led to the Demo inspired Cuban missile crisis.
We had the Demo inspired war in Nam.
King gave his dream speech.
The Beetles became famous.
LBJ initiated the bombing of North Vietnam.
JFK, King and Robert K were assassinated.
Near the end of the decade we had Woodstock.

None of those things had enduring value...except perhaps King's speech.
