HP and Unisys have good margins on high end Intel systems. You really can't compare DELL margins with high end system margins - DELL has no high end systems. DELL doesn't want or need the engineering, service, or support that are a requirement to selling systems - DELL sells boxes.

Sun could certainly use an architecture for volume business that could be extended to their high end. First, by driving up overall volumes, they reduce all their component costs. Second, if they can get to a point where their R&D is not spent in an area where it gives them little value-add (and I would argue that SPARC is such an area )then they will either be able to reduce costs substantially, or do more R&D that DOES pay off.

All in all, I don't buy your margin argument. I think you have it backwards.
