Would you agree that setting a firm retail price before production would put Sony at a disadvantage, allowing Iomega to make pre-emptive adjustments in their pricing? I see no conflict, just straight ahead strategic non-disclosure on Sony's part. Sony is shipping both internals and externals, but is concentrating promotion on the internals. Hey...Isn't Iomega trying to do the same thing now? I believe your observations regarding Sony's "indecisions" are actually hopes and desires. Rest assured, Sony is coming- and in a big way. Many people on Usenet can't wait.
