Plains wheat needs snow cover before cold snap-USDA
Wednesday January 21, 6:45 pm ET

WASHINGTON, Jan 21 (Reuters) - The winter wheat crop in the central and northern Plains states has lost virtually all of its snow cover and is vulnerable to a cold snap predicted for this weekend, a U.S. Agriculture Department weather forecaster said on Wednesday.

Some patchy snow remains in wheat-growing areas of Montana and parts of South Dakota, but the rest of the northern and central Plains has been without significant snow or rain for about two months, said USDA forecaster Brad Rippey.

An Arctic cold snap is predicted to sweep across the Plains states this weekend, plunging temperatures well below normal.

"The big threat with the winter wheat would be if this weekend's cold outbreak comes without the benefit of snow cover," Rippey said.

"Typically some snow does occur with Arctic outbreaks," he said. "It's going to be very important to get a little bit of snow on top of that (wheat) before some of these sub-zero temperatures come down late in the weekend or early next week."

Winter wheat is planted in late autumn, goes dormant during the cold winter months and reaches maturity in early summer.
