Help! Anybody! Any experts here on hacking? On cyberterrorism?
Must finish up an article tonight.
To make a long story short: You may know that there is a big war going on right now in Dagestan, the Russian Caucasus. Dagestan borders Chechnya (the Chechen War, remember?). Well, a bunch of mujaheddin crossed the border from Chechnya into Dagestan, and proclaimed an Independent Islamic State there. The Russian Army, of course, started bombing them, & so forth & so on.
There is only one source for news from the mujaheddin side <www.kavkaz.org>, and it is located in Chechnya. But it is registered in the US, and had (until today) a server in California. It is one of the most visited sites in Russia (No. 21), but most Russians hate it.
There was one hacking attempt, but it basically failed.
Next, the Russian Minister of the Interior announced that FBI Director Frees, convinced of the Chechen-Bin Laden connection, had promised US help in closing down "terrorist" Chechen Internet sites. (?!)
Next(today), the California server notified the guy who registered <kavkaz.com> that it was cancelling the account, because the company had received just too many complaints about it, to the effect that it was a "hate site", advocated "terrorism," etc., etc. So the site was moved to a free server.
Next, although the site has been moved, you can't get into it. Whatever you click on, you get: "Not Found. This URL cannot be found on this server."
All-important question: Is this a hack job from Russia, or is it the FBI???? Is it Network Solutions (it got conned in the initial hacking attempt)??? Anyone have any idea? Or any idea about how this can be done? If not, anybody know anybody who MIGHT know?
I don't like Internet censorship, of any kind...
