Kyodo via Individual Inc. : TOKYO, Dec. 9 (Kyodo) _ Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) is planning to enter the intranet business as part of its plan to advance, where possible under current laws, into the international telecom sector, an NTT source said Monday.
The telecom giant's entry into the international service field is sought as part of a realignment plan announced last Friday by NTT and the Posts and Telecommunications Ministry.
NTT will be reorganized in fiscal 1998 into one-long distance and two regional carriers under the wing of a holding company. The long-distance entity is to have access to the international market.
NTT, however, is looking for international operations that it can start offering under current laws, since legislation covering its reorganization is expected to take time, the source said.
One of these areas, the company believes, is intranets --in-house information networks for corporate customers that use Internet technologies. Unlike the Internet, which is open to everyone, however, intranets have ''fire walls'' to prevent classified corporate information from leaking.
NTT is currently forbidden by law from offering international telecom services, and it has been regarded as difficult for the company to enter the intranet business given that some corporate customers will have overseas outlets.
However, with the recent deregulation moves by the government, NTT now thinks that it will be allowed to offer intranet services as long as it does not develop its own international lines but leases them from international telecom companies like KDD, the source said. |
