New program provides the necessary support for third party developers to create the next generation of broadband user software applications HATBORO, Pa., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- NextLevel Systems, Inc. (NYSE: NLV) launched today its Horizon Developers Program, an effort to create the next generation of broadband user software applications and Internet access.
The Horizon Developers Program is designed to provide technical, marketing and sales support to help third-party developers create tomorrow's new services and applications -- which include video-on-demand, real-time games, stock trading, shopping, travel, printing, telecommuting and telephony. The program was created so third party developers can focus on their core business -- content -- while partnering with NextLevel in broadband technology. The Horizon program supports development efforts for both advanced analog and digital platforms.
Horizon Developer technical support will include a dedicated engineering staff who will aid in the development and testing process and the Horizon Development Center, based in Hatboro, Pa., which will be equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, the latest broadband technologies and an operational cable headend. There also will be a complete software developer's kit with reference materials, API manuals, software libraries and tools; training classes; and phone-in technical support.
Horizon Developer marketing support will include cooperative advertising opportunities such as product videos, sales kit insertions, promotional materials and sales literature. The Horizon Program also offers opportunities for seed capital to companies with concepts for creating revenue-generating applications. In addition, the program offers exceptional sales support by creating a direct link to NextLevel's global sales force. This includes customer demo opportunities and contact with NextLevel's customer base worldwide.
Examples of the kinds of applications that would be developed through the Horizon Program include: Wink Communications' Enhanced Broadcasting; CableSoft's community information on-demand; WorldGate's web browsing, e-mail and HyperLinking(SM); interactive program guides such as Prevue; Music Choice's digital audio channels; Interactive Channel's complete package of interactive programs and applications and ACTV's individualized television.
"With broadband operators seeking new ways to increase their revenues, launch new services, grow their subscriber base and keep their customers satisfied, there is a tremendous need for new set-top applications," said Ed Breen, President of NextLevel 's Broadband Networks Group. "We created the Horizon Developers Program to fill this need and create the next generation of software applications. NextLevel provides all of the technical resources and centralized support -- all the developers need is their imagination."
To provide timely on-line support, NextLevel will launch the Horizon Developers Web Site at www.nlvl.com. The site will include news, announcements, and program information, as well as access for registered Horizon Developers to technical bulletin boards, reference materials, development tools, and software libraries.
