Cody...here's my two cents on mutual funds. Only the top five % (maybe less) are worth investing. Although I am still a beginner (investor since 6/96) I have already returned 25 % thus far on quality and sound investment...no options (yet). Although this is not nearly as impressive as Sal Habash's record...I am quite content that I have beaten many fund managers this year. Only time will tell if I am consistent. I do own about 20k worth Putnam New Opportunities (Class B) because of the fund manager, his track record, and various aspects and goals of this fund. My reasoning, like all stock pickers...you won't always pick winners. And the fact that when a mutual fund makes
money it is automatically reinvested to buy more shares. So in a market correction the NAV will drop but you will be sheltered from significant losses because you have more shares. The downside of mutual funds is that it is not as liquid as a stock purchase.

Hence...stock picking (provided that you do thorough analysis) has more potential upside considering the fact that most fund managers under perform the SP500. But there's a small number of funds that does consistently beat the SP500 and will balance out your portfolio.

So you are right...way too many people are blindly investing in mutual funds. Hey..but that's good for the rest of us eh ? Help pushing the DOW to where it hasn't gone before...

Joe
