People protest for equality when things get significantly unequal. No-one does it for minor inconveniences.

Sticking to one famous man who protested - Gandhi. He truly believed that by doing all the right things, becoming a lawyer, wearing western clothes, and communicating in English he would be considered somewhat equal to a european. Then he got kicked out a train compartment reserved for whites...And the rest is history.
