Consider lossless encoding. Theoretically, it should sound just like the original CD. In this case, the 60-80GB is NOT overkill.

I do agree that for most music only, 10GB is probably sufficient for a vast majority of users, and 20GB might be good for all but the last 2%.

When we talk about video, bigger is still better for a while. And as far as separating camps, there's the both digital and portable. It would be nice to have a 100GB iPod sized collection and transfer some music to a 2GB Shuffle sized unit with and without a computer/iTunes. Maybe sometime in the future...
