STAMFORD, Conn. (CBS.MW) -- Gartner Group said Wednesday it's paying $80 million cash for TechRepublic, a Web site built by information technology pros for networking purposes.

Gartner (IT: news, msgs) said it'll gain "a powerful Internet channel" in the deal.

The tech consultant said it purchased 90 percent of TechRepublic with the remaining 10 percent to be held by TechRepublic management and employees.

In less than a year on the Web, TechRepublic's site has drawn more than 450,000 registered members representing all segments of the IT industry.

"Success in this business is defined by content, brand and reach. The TechRepublic acquisition is a powerful extension of Gartner's reach via the Internet," Michael Fleisher, president and chief executive officer of Gartner, said in a statement.

Shares of the Gartner Group rose 1 1/4 to 15 1/2.
