Compal loses OEM chance as Motorola backs off from '3G for all' program, paper says

Commercial Times, December 14; Rodney Chan, DigiTimes.com [Thursday 14 December 2006]

Compal Communications, which makes Motorola's sub-US$30 handsets under the GSM Association's (GSMA's) ultra-low-cost handset initiative, has lost the opportunity to produce more low-cost handsets for the client, as the US vendor has decided not to participate in the GSMA's latest "3G for all" program, according to the Chinese-language Commercial Times.

Compal's internal assessment also concluded that Motorola's OEM quote of US$70 for the low-cost 3G handset that the vendor had intended to produce for the GSMA initiative would have given manufacturers a "very difficult task," the paper said.

Compal's sub-US$30 handsets for Motorola have driven up the maker's handset shipments this year to 65 million units, the paper added.
